Yoga Tips for a Less Stressful Back-to-School

There are so many mixed feelings surrounding this time of year. As parents, back-to-school means early mornings, packing lunches, scrambling to get everyone out the door on time, after-school activities that conflict with dinner time, homework … UGH! 

In all the busyness, it can be difficult to take a step back and remind yourself that sometimes the most productive thing you can do is to breathe deeply and slow down. This is especially true in those stressful mornings when you’re in a mad rush for the door.

I’ve been trying to remind myself to slow down and stay calm. 

Is it a struggle? Yes. 

Do I lose it often? So often. 

But I’m trying to bring that yoga presence and calm into our mornings, and so should you. 

Here’s why.

I’ve noticed that it doesn’t just make me feel more grounded and ready to tackle whatever comes up, but I can see a shift in my kids, too:

When I’m not in a panic, they aren’t either. Their stress levels are lower. They feel safer, more secure, and more prepared to tackle those last-minute surprises that inevitably pop up. (I forgot to charge the Chromebook! There are scrumblies in these socks! I spilled my water! Breathe. It’s going to be OK.). 

And, believe it or not, when we slow down, we’re more likely to get out the door on time, too. 

Trust me. 

There’s less arguing. Less frustration getting shoe laces tied and the backpack packed. More focused movement toward the door. 

Here’s are a few yoga tips for a less stressful back to school 

Slow down. Breathe. Remind yourself (and your kids) that sometimes it’s better to be a few minutes late than to ruin your day by letting yourself get all stressed out about being late.

Be kind to yourself—and your kids—as you all adjust to a new schedule and routine. You aren’t robots. Do your best, laugh a little when it doesn’t work out, and try again tomorrow.

This isn’t easy, but it will get easier.

Your best is more than enough.

You’re doing a great job. 

And if all else fails try bribing them with ice cream at the end of the week if they get ready on time. (Not a yoga concept, but it works at my house!)
